Restoring Dissimilar Systems
Some special consideration must be given to restoring to dissimilar hardware. If at all possible, the replacement drive
should be the same make and model as the original. If this is not possible, the replacement drive has to be at least as
large as the original.
IDE drives have specific information about themselves stored in the CMOS memory chip on your motherboard. When
your computer is turned on, your boot ROM reads this CMOS chip and uses these settings to talk to the hard drive.
SnapBack needs these settings to be identical to the original drive so it will be able to restore your drive and operate
properly.
In most cases, you should not change your CMOS settings when installing a new hard drive. If it doesn't work, you
may then need to change your CMOS settings as follows: Go into your CMOS setup (refer to your motherboard
manual for instructions) and view your current drive settings, for example:
Type 22, Cylinders=1069 Heads=35 Tracks=29
Write these down NOW. You should change the drive type while keeping the number of Cylinders, Heads, and
Tracks the same as they were before you changed hard drives.
To do this, try to change to drive type 47, which will allow you to type in the Cylinders, Heads, and Tracks. If this
drive type will not allow you to change these settings, refer to your motherboard manual or call SnapBack . Keep in
close contact with us as we work to resolve this issue.
Even though the replacement drive might have a higher capacity than the original, it is not possible, at this time, to
utilize the extra capacity on an IDE drive.
