The SnapBack Client
17
Write Cache
SnapBack flawlessly backs up all open files and transactions on your file server by using a cache file to preserve the
server's data exactly as it was the instant that the backup was started.
SnapBack requires a cache file on the system partition (usually C) where it saves all the original unchanged sectors
from your server before new disk writes replace them.
The sectors contained in the cache file are then backed up to the SCSI tape instead of the sectors that you changed
when writing to a file. This way, a SnapBack tape takes a complete instantaneous picture of the hard drive, safely
capturing all open files while your hard drive remains real time current.
SnapBack requires at least a 20 MB cache file in order to operate. If you feel that more data will be written to your
server during backups, you can increase this amount to whatever you feel will be needed. Keep in mind, you must
have this amount of free disk space on your system partition.
Size of cache file in megabytes
This is the size of the cache file that SnapBack will use, by default it is 20mb but it can be changes as necessary.
Maximum amount of space on SYS volume to use as cache
This is the maximum size the cache file will be allowed to grow to if Double cache file when limit exceeded is set
Restart backup when cache limit exceeded
If this option is set and during a backup the cache file fills up, SnapBack will restart the backup straight away from the
beginning. It is recommended that this be on.
Double cache file when limit exceeded
If this option is set and during a backup the cache file fills up, SnapBack will set the next backup to use a cache file
that is twice the size. If Restart backup when cache limit exceeded is also set, it will being a new backup with a larger
cache file straight away. It is recommended that this be on.
